7 Styles of Urns We Recommend

Urns for cremated remains come in a wide range of designs and materials. Bearing that in mind, each style aims to provide a unique way to remember your loved one. You can choose an urn made of wood, metal, glass, or marble to hold your loved one’s ashes.

In addition to material, you can also choose urns based on the storage capacity you want. You can find a small size urn for an infant, standard size for an individual adult, and larger urns for couples. Plus, you can request a personalized urn for your loved one based on their profession or wishes.

Below are seven styles of urns we recommend.

1. Decorative Urn

These types of urns have attractive shapes and drawings that serve as house decoration. They come in a wide range of colors, designs, and materials. Decorative urns are a good alternative if you intend to keep your loved one’s ashes for a long time.

They require more artistic skills to make them more attractive. Plus, they have more durable material that can survive several generations. For these reasons, they tend to be more expensive.

2. Companion Urn

A companion urn is a relatively larger urn that can hold the ashes of more than one person. They’re ideal for people who prefer to be remembered together, such as couples, parents, and grandparents. You can also use these urns for individuals with larger bodies.

A single companion urn can hold around 400 cubic inches of cremated remains. The large size can also allow you to add other items, such as photographs or a pet’s ashes.

Some companion urns have a divider that separates the ashes of the two people. Others have undivided space that allows you to mingle the ashes of two individuals.

3. Keepsake Urns

A standard cremation urn holds approximately 200 cubic inches of cremains. But a keepsake urn stores between 20 to 100 cubic inches of the cremated ashes.

Keepsake urns are ideal for larger families. Each family member takes a small share of the cremains to remember their loved one. They’re also suitable for those who live in small apartments and retirement homes due to their convenience in storage.

4. Veteran Urns

These are patriotic urns for cremated remains of veterans and active-duty members of the military. Their purpose is to honor soldiers who have loyally served their country. Veteran’s services are part of the packages offered. Notably, the urns for ashes and the cremation services follow a unique process that shows respect to the veteran.

Veteran urns have an inscription of the government emblem and the national flag. Another point, they can only hold the ashes of a single person. The storage capacity is approximately 150 to 250 cubic inches.

5. Eco-Friendly Urns

If you intend to bury your loved one’s ashes, burial urns made from biodegradable materials would be a perfect choice. Eco-friendly urns come in different materials, such as recycled paper, corn starch, gelatin, sand, and salt. Unlike traditional urns, which are durable, eco-friendly urns disintegrate with time.

Eco-friendly urns come with a plastic bag that holds the ashes. If you want to dispose of the ashes in the ocean, the plastic bag dissolves in the water. The bags also decompose when buried underground. However, if you want to bury the ashes in a cemetery, you may be required to use an urn vault, which is usually non-biodegradable.

6. Child or Infant Urn

Children’s urns for cremated remains are generally smaller than the standard size. They usually hold less than 100 cubic inches of cremated ash. Like other traditional urns, they come in different styles and materials. You can have them customized according to your specific requirements.

Most people prefer to inscribe messages or their child’s photo on the urn. You can also get them in various shapes or images, such as teddy bears and butterflies.

7. Pet Urns

If you love animals, you understand the pain of losing a pet. Pet urns allow you to hold the ashes of your cherished pet, such as a dog, cat, or bird. Like infant urns, pet urns have smaller storage capacities of approximately 30 to 80 cubic inches.

Some pet urns come in the shape of an animal, while others have images of paws painted on the surface. You can customize your pet’s urn by engraving your pet’s name or attaching a picture on the surface.
